Johanne Allard | Phosphorous (Syria), 2024
Edition 1/3
This piece marks one of Syria’s many tragedies: the documented use of white phosphorus on civilians. White phosphorus ignites on contact with oxygen, burning flesh and bone and posing a lasting threat as it can reignite even weeks later. Though it cannot capture the full scope of Syria’s suffering, this work reflects on the enduring scars left on both its people and its landscape. Ten years of war have destroyed Syria’s economic, social, and cultural structures. The country that existed in 2011 is hardly recognizable today.
