About

"In a State of Flux, nomad/utopia’s inaugural exhibition in Beirut, examines issues of impermanence in the contemporary world, with a focus on the Middle East and more particularly Lebanon.
Uncertainty takes a toll on people and their psyche, as beings and minds evolve in a state of voluntary or involuntary displacement, through geography but also within themselves. The representation of the human body itself is plastic, hovering between heroism and oppression, physical space and cyberspace. As the artists suggest, matter is also vulnerable to change – simultaneously at the minuscule, almost invisible level, and when cityscapes once believed to be indestructible are now devoured by conflict and catastrophe. Throughout the show, as the artists propose, culture itself is in flux, jumps through time, crosses unexpected geographies, while they seek to reveal, and perhaps resolve, deep-set and often ignored anxieties."

About the curator:

Marie Tomb is an art historian, curator, and writer, with a main area of focus on the Modern and Contemporary Middle East. Trained at Yale University, the Courtauld Institute of Art, and the School of Oriental and African Studies, Marie enjoys a prolific body of writing, spanning academia, criticism, and curatorial essays. Marie often collaborates with leading regional art fairs and museums, consulting on editorial direction and art historical research, and is a frequent lecturer on art and design in universities.
